"De rat heeft recht van leven, net als alle andere dieren. Er bestaat geen ongedierte, alles heeft een functie”.
“Ik woon hier in dit huis al 35 jaar en in de Tweebosstraat 51 jaar. Omdat de woningen hier zo slecht gerenoveerd zijn, kunnen de ratten over de plafonds van woning naar woning komen. Een paar maanden terug zag de heer Baris voor het laatst een rat. Ze gebruiken de geveltuintjes als verstopplek, logisch. De ratten hebben ook vijanden: honden en katten. Vooral halverwege de Tweebosstraat ligt veel eten zoals rijst en turkse broden.
Op de Hilledijk wordt vaak rijst gestrooid. Vanuit mijn achtertuin kijk ik uit op de dijk. In mijn achtertuin heb ik een klein soort bruine rat en dan heb je nog de huisratten; ratten die door mensen het huis uit gezet worden.
De heer Baris vertelt wat hij vroeger op de ambachtschool aan de Hillevliet over ratten leerde:
“Als timmerman en bouwvakker leerde ik op de ambachtschool dat je nooit onbeschermd een kruipruimte in moet gaan. Zwangere vrouwtjesratten produceren een stof die in de urine zit. Besmetting hiermee, zoals bij een open wond, kan de ziekte van Weil veroorzaken. Dus altijd stevige werkhandschoenen en laarzen aan”.
